One Step

Streamline actions by cutting out extra steps.

What is it:

Time is a valuable resource, and people today are always on the go, with little time to spare. As a result, the longer a task takes, the less likely it is that people will complete it. Not only that, but motivation can quickly dwindle when a task seems too complicated or time-consuming. The One Step tactic is a simple solution to this problem - by removing unnecessary steps, tasks become more straightforward and easier to complete. This, in turn, increases the chances of success and helps to keep motivation high, ensuring that tasks are completed quickly and efficiently.

How to Use It:

What’s the science behind it?

  • Fogg’s B=MAP framework explains how three elements - motivation, ability, and triggers - converge to create behaviour change. For a behaviour to occur, a person must have sufficient motivation, the ability to perform the action, and an effective trigger or prompt.
The One Step tactic aligns with B=MAP by streamlining tasks to make them more manageable. This increases an individual's ability to perform the task and maintains motivation, ultimately leading to a higher likelihood of task completion.

  • This theory posits that our working memory has a limited capacity to process new information. The theory is based on the idea that cognitive load can be categorised into three types: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Intrinsic load refers to the inherent difficulty of the task, extraneous load refers to the load imposed by the way information is presented, and germane load relates to the cognitive resources needed for learning.
The One Step tactic relates to the concept of reducing extraneous cognitive load. By simplifying tasks and removing unnecessary steps, the cognitive demands placed on an individual are reduced, making it more likely that they will complete the task efficiently.
