Dry Run

Get people to practice beforehand.

What is it:

Dry Run is all about practicing before the real action starts. It's a chance to try things out in a safe space, where mistakes are part of the learning, not the outcome. This approach builds confidence and the belief that "I can do this," turning hesitation into readiness for the real deal.

What’s the science behind it?

  • Developed by Albert Bandura, it posits that people learn from one another via observation, imitation, and modelling. The theory highlights the importance of observing others in learning new behaviours and emphasises that the environment and cognitive factors interact to influence learning. Social learning can occur in a variety of settings and does not require direct reinforcement, but observational learning from models can significantly enhance individuals' abilities to perform new tasks by providing clear examples of behaviour.
The Dry Run tactic leverages the principles of Social Learning Theory by allowing individuals to practice new tasks in a simulated environment, which can act as a form of observational learning when guided or demonstrated by a model or instructor. This practice helps individuals internalise the actions and outcomes through repeated rehearsal, reducing anxiety and uncertainty about the real performance. By experiencing what to expect and refining their techniques in a no-pressure setting, individuals build competence and confidence. Consequently, when it's time to perform the task in a real situation, they are better prepared and more likely to succeed, having learned through both direct experience and the emulation of successful behaviours.

  • Developed by Albert Bandura, explains how individuals' beliefs in their ability to succeed in specific situations significantly influence their motivation, persistence, and performance. Self-efficacy is built through personal experiences of mastery, vicarious experiences (observing others), verbal persuasion, and emotional states. Higher self-efficacy leads to greater confidence and a higher likelihood of engaging in challenging tasks because individuals believe they can manage and succeed in those situations.
Dry Run effectively enhances self-efficacy by providing a controlled, low-pressure environment where individuals can practice tasks before facing the actual scenario. This practice builds confidence as it allows individuals to experience mastery, adjust their methods, and learn from any mistakes without real-world consequences. Consequently, when faced with the actual situation, they are more prepared and believe more strongly in their ability to succeed. This belief, reinforced by successful practice, encourages further engagement and facilitates a positive cycle of achievement and increased self-efficacy with each new challenge.

  • Constructivism is a learning theory that posits individuals construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. According to this theory, learning is an active, constructive process where learners build new ideas or concepts based upon their current and past knowledge. The learner is an active creator of their own knowledge rather than passively receiving information; personal experiences and hypotheses of the environment drive learning.
Dry Run tactic aligns well with Constructivism by providing an opportunity for learners to engage actively with new tasks in a controlled, no-pressure environment. This practice allows individuals to explore and experiment with different approaches, making adjustments based on feedback and their reflections on the process.
